On the one hand, she is the best docume 2 CONC nted ancestor I know of. In 1797 she inherited an estate in Kensington, through John Wright w 2 CONC ho may have been her grandtather. This estate was large and is now occupied by several shops 2 CONC , hotels and High Street Kensington tube station. The Survey of London has studied the Wrigh 2 CONC t estate and established that Ann passed over the estate to her son David Henry, who sold of 2 CONC f parcels of land throughout the 19th century. My mother recalled her father telling her tha 2 CONC t he went up to London to clear out the house, which her referred to as Scarsdale House (th 2 CONC e Survey of London would dispute this I think, since their view is that Scarsdale House wa 2 CONC s a late 17th-century mansion which was demolished during the 19th century). My mother was t 2 CONC old that the lease on the land ran out and the family did not have the money to extend it. Th 2 CONC e Survey of London, on the other hand, state that some parts of the land was held freehold 2 CONC . No matter. 2 CONT 2 CONT BIOGRAPHY: I possess two letters from Ann to her son George, dated 1844 and 1855. According t 2 CONC o his memorial, William George Alexander would have been just 13 in 1844 and yet the letter i 2 CONC mplies that George has just become a father! The second letter mentions a sister, probably th 2 CONC e Miss Alexander who attended Arthur's wedding in 1896 who was said in the newspaper report t 2 CONC o be Arthur's aunt. However, this second letter makes no mention of wife or children. Willia 2 CONC m George was married in 1864 at Chelsea and would have been 33 by then. This is quite old fo 2 CONC r a first marriage but perhaps he was married before? The correlation of the George Alexande 2 CONC r of Ann's letters and my great-grandfather, William George, seems very likely. When Arthur w 2 CONC as married the newspaper report refers to William George as George. 2 CONT 2 CONT BIOGRAPHY: Another unusual fact about Ann is that her son David was born in Altona, near Hamb 2 CONC urg. 2 CONT 2 CONT BIOGRAPHY: Ann's will and its codicils help to chart her life from the 1840s onwards: 2 CONT 2 CONT BIOGRAPHY: 1841 - living in Beaminster, Dorset, when her will was first made 2 CONT 1841 - Recorded in the Netherbury Census with David, her son, and three servants 2 CONT 1842 - first codicil to will states that Ann is 'late of Beaminster' and now of Parham Plac 2 CONC e in the Kings Road, Chelsea. 2 CONT 1843 - second codicil states that Ann was still in the Kings Road, Chelsea. 2 CONT 1844 - letter sent from Netherbury [near Beaminster] to George 2 CONT 1845 - her son, David, was married at Stoke next Guildford in Surrey, which suggests she ma 2 CONC y have moved to Surrey by then 2 CONT 1846 - third codicil states that Ann is now living in Haslemere, Surrey 2 CONT 1846 - witnessed the will of her son, Charles 2 CONT 1847 - Executrix of Charles' will, still said to be 'of Haslemere, Surrey' 2 CONT 1855 - sent letter from London to George at Ryder's Hill, presumably the suburb of Guildford 2 CONC , Surrey 2 CONT 1856 - unnumbered codicil states that Ann is living in Worpleston, Surrey 2 CONT 1857 - fourth codicil states that Ann has moved from Haslemere to Guildford, both in Surrey 2 CONT 1868 - living at Folkestone at the time of her death.
